Not everyone who hears about the bikotel seal for the first time immediately understands what it means.
This article aims to clear that up from two different perspectives. If you’re staying at a bikotel, what can you expect? And if you own an accommodation or represent a destination, what does it mean to be part of this network?
If you’re staying at a bikotel
A bikotel is more than just accommodation with a place to keep your bike. It is a commitment to hospitality designed from the ground up for people who don’t part with their bike on holidays or weekends, and this translates into concrete guarantees at every accommodation that carries the seal:
- Secure parking for your bike, so you never have to leave it by the door or worry about theft.
- Mapped cycling routes, with local information on where to ride and different difficulty levels.
- A mini workshop and basic repair kit for small mechanical mishaps.
- Laundry, because after a day in the saddle your kit needs looking after.
- A menu designed for cyclists, with meals suited to those who burn a lot of energy.
Depending on the accommodation, you may also find extra services such as bike washing, e-bike support, bike rental, a helpline, guide services, massages or even medical assistance. Each bikotel has its own set of features, but all of them share the minimum standard that makes sure your bike is as welcome as you are.
Today, the network includes more than 200 accommodations, over 1,000 mapped routes and 5 certified destinations across the country, from the Azores to the Alentejo, from the Historic Villages to the Atlantic Coast. This means that wherever your next trip takes you, there’s a good chance you’ll find a bikotel along the way.

If you own an accommodation or represent a destination
On the other side, becoming a bikotel is not just about putting a sticker on the door. It is a certification process that assesses whether the accommodation meets a set of minimum requirements (the same ones that guarantee the experience described above), which can then be complemented by extra services that strengthen the offer for people travelling by bike.
What the network offers in return goes beyond the seal itself:
- Visibility among an international community of cycle tourists, through the platform, social media and the brand’s promotional work.
- Distinctive positioning in a growing tourism segment that tends to travel outside the traditional high season. It is a real opportunity to extend occupancy throughout the year.
- Integration into a national network, with partner destinations and regional tourism bodies, which strengthens the accommodation’s credibility.
The same reasoning applies to destinations and territories. A bikotel destination is not just a region with good roads, but a territory that invests in infrastructure, structured routes and a network of well-prepared accommodations. It is a joint effort between those who manage the territory and those who welcome the traveller.

What brings the two perspectives together
Ultimately, the bikotel seal exists with a simple goal: to make sure that anyone travelling by bike in Portugal finds, anywhere in the country, accommodations and destinations that understand their needs, and that those who invest in preparing for this audience have a clear way of communicating it.
